A case study of ships forming and not forming tracks in moderately polluted clouds OMA
Noone, K.J.; Öström, E.; Ferek, R.J.; Garrett, T.; Hobbs, P.V.; Johnson, D.W.; Taylor, J.P.; Russell, L.M.; Flagan, R.C.; Seinfeld, J.H.; O'Dowd, C.D.; Smith, M.H.; Durkee, P.A.; Nielsen, K.; Hudson, J.G.; Pockalny, R.A.; De Bock, L.; Van Grieken, R.E.; Gasparovic, R.F.; Brooks, I..
The effects of anthropogenic particulate emissions from ships on the radiative, microphysical, and chemical properties of m(oderately polluted marine stratiform clouds are examined. A case study of two ships in the same air mass is presented where one of the vessels caused a discernible ship track while the other did not. In situ measurements of cloud droplet size distributions, liquid water content, and cloud radiative properties, as well as aerosol size distributions (outside cloud, interstitial, and cloud droplet residual particles) and aerosol chemistry, are presented. These are related to measurements of cloud radiative properties. The differences between the aerosol in the two ship plumes are discussed; these indicate that...

Characterizing and Comparing the Spawning Habitats of Sardine (Sardinops sagax) and Anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Northern Benguela Region OceanDocs
Tjizoo,Mbeurora Beau.
Spawning habitats of sardine and anchovy in eastern boundary current systems are characterized in an attempt to understand the fluctuations observed in their abundance. The northern Benguela, as an eastern boundary current system, is characterized by turbulent conditions that seem to govern the variability observed in the abundance of these species. Sardine and anchovy have developed mechanisms that enable them to maximize productivity. In the northern Benguela, spawning intensity is historically known to be high in periods and vicinities where turbulence is reduced. However, it is believed that selection of conditions for spawning by these species may change withfluctuations in abundance of fish.

Distribution and Abundance of Finfish in Godineau Swamp OceanDocs
Ramsundar, H..
The Godineau Swamp is home to several species of plants, wildlife, fish and waterfowl, including our protected Scarlet Ibis. It has been heavily influenced by anthropogenic activities and probably needs careful regulation of its development in order to obtain the maximum benefits from the swamp without destroying it. The Fisheries component of the Godineau Swamp Research Project aims to document the fish species that live in the swamp, their relative distribution and abundance and characterize the fishing practices in the area. The first phase has been completed and the second phase, characterisation of the fishing practices, is carded to begin in mid- November. The whole Godineau Research project is directed at assessing the ecology of the swamp in its...

Hermi, M.; Aissa, P..
The answer of the free nematode populations to the physico - chemical state of “ lake ” south Tunis has been studied in autumn 96 from 10 sampling sites. Their very weak specific diversity (Hermi, 2001) and the non selective détritivorous proliferation (1B) bound to the strong contents in recorded organic matter (Hermi, 2001) revealed the sensitivity of nematodes to the eutrophication and nutritionnal pollution. According to several interrelationships calculations, the waters saturation in oxygen, their contents in abeyance matter and in nitrogen as well as the sediments granulometry and their contents in certain heavy metals, appeared the most lagoonar determining parameters. Otherwise, the answer of nematofaunistic communities living in South lake was...

Impact of agro-industrial activities on the water quality of River Nyando, Lake Victoria Basin, Kenya OceanDocs
Raburu, P. O.; Okeyo-Owuor, J.B..
The impact of agro-industrial activities on the water quality within River Nyando, Lake Victoria Basin (Kenya) was studied at different hierarchical levels between August 1997 and June 1999. Triplicate water samples were collected on a monthly basis from various stations ranging from the source to the mouth of the river and analyzed for selected physical and chemical water quality parameters using standard analytical methods. Statistical analysis was performed using MINITAB and STATISTICA computer packages. Agricultural land use was found to be the major factor contributing to changes in water quality. Salinity and pH varied at river basin scale, turbidity, TDS and conductivity at catchment scale, while DO, alkalinity and pH at subcatchment and river reach...

Implications of climate change on the management of Rift Valley lakes in Kenya. The case of lake Baringo OceanDocs
Ngaira, Josephine K..
Climate patterns of the World became very variable during the last half of the twentieth century. Causes of this variability/change have been identified as: Sun Spot activity, ozone depletion, decline in the solar beam, with the more pronounced especially in Africa being Increased atmospheric carbondioxide, and albedo change due to anthropogenic factors. The most affected weather elements by the above mentioned factors particularly in the tropics are Rainfall and Temperature, and the climatic environments most affected by the named weather elements are the arid and semi-arid lands which are already moisture constrained. The rift valley in Kenya, where most of the lakes are located experience Arid and Semi-Arid climate. The lakes located in this region are...

Water quality trends and input loads to Lake Nakuru OceanDocs
Kulecho, Andrew; Muhandiki, Victor.
Water quality trends of Lake Nakuru, Kenya and its feeder streams were monitored in 2001-2004. Water samples were obtained from eleven stations in the lake and five points on inflowing streams. The items monitored were physico-chemical and biological components. The drainage basin was characterized by recurrence of dry spells throughout the period with water losses in the lake exceeding the amount received to cause a fall in water volume. The lake water salts content rose – conductivity and alkalinity reached 58 ms/cm and 5,200 mg/l respectively. PH was more or less constant (10.00 – 10.36). Daytime oxygen concentration in the mid-lake system rose (to greater than 20 mg/l) while remaining low in the inflow portions of the lake. On one occasion, the lake...

Проблемы антропогенного эвтрофирования и развития гипоксии в северо-западной части Черного моря IBSS Repository
Берлинский, Н. А.; Гаркавая, Г. П.; Богатова, Ю. И..
